Frequently Asked Questions

A few clear answers about the teachings, the Journal, and where to begin.

The Path

What is Ninzen?

Ninzen is Eric Covey’s dojo and martial expression, shaped by his training, study, and experience. It brings martial practice, breath, and perception into everyday life.

What are the three ninja manuals?

The Bansenshūkai, Shōninki, and Ninpiden are the three great shinobi manuals. The Journal's Unseen Doctrine series reads them honestly: what they actually say, how old they really are, and what carries into modern life.

What is Kage no Michi?

Kage no Michi means the Way of Shadow. It is the study of unseen forces that influence behavior, perception, and action, built on five pillars: shadow awareness, Shinshinshingan, breath and regulation, martial expression, and integration. It draws on the three ninja manuals together with the twelve Ninja Mind Codes. Its aim is Shinshinshingan, the True Eye: seeing clearly enough to choose your response.

What are the Ninja Mind Codes?

Twelve principles that guide how you perceive, choose, and act. Return to them through study and practice, both inside and outside the dojo.

Is the Unseen Path a separate course?

No. The Unseen Path is how you carry the Ninja Mind Codes and Kage no Michi beyond the dojo and into your life. It does not add another curriculum or set of stages.

What is the Journal for?

The Journal holds the deeper readings, including the ninja manuals and topics such as Three Faces, Kintsugi, the Shadow Cycle, and martial practice. These readings now live together rather than on separate teaching pages.

Getting Started

Where do I begin?

Start with How to Begin Kage no Michi in the Journal. Read the guide, practice what it introduces, and return to it as needed. You do not have to read everything at once.

Are there belts in Kage no Michi?

No. Kage no Michi has no belts. You study, observe, practice, and keep walking. The point is how you live the teaching, not a rank.

Do I need martial arts experience?

No prior experience is needed to begin studying the teachings. For physical training, contact Eric to discuss an appropriate starting point.

How much time should I give it?

Begin with a small amount of practice you can return to consistently. Read a little, put it into practice, and notice what happens. There is no need to rush through the material.

Do I need a membership?

Yes. One membership at $19/month or $180/year unlocks all member content, including the Codes, Kage no Michi, Unseen Path, and the Journal. Both options provide the same access. There is no separate enrollment fee or dojo payment.

What if I take a break?

Return when you are ready. Start with the beginner guide or a teaching you want to revisit. Pick up the practice from where you are now.

Still Have Questions?

If your question is not answered here, contact Eric. You do not need to have everything figured out before you ask.
